POGO Women’s Movement files complaint over online gender-based violence

The POGO Women’s Movement filed a formal complaint with the relevant authorities on Thursday over an incident of online gender-based violence and the sharing of sexist content on a social media platform.

In its announcement, POGO said: “The targeting, public shaming, objectification and online harassment of women cannot be treated as just another aspect of everyday life on the internet. These are forms of gender-based violence that offend women’s dignity, reinforce misogyny and cultivate a climate of tolerance towards violence.”

POGO said such phenomena must be investigated promptly and effectively, adding that protecting women from all forms of digital violence and abuse is the responsibility of the state, the relevant authorities and the platforms themselves.

The organisation closed its statement by saying: “We will not stay silent in the face of sexism and gender-based violence, wherever they occur. We will continue to use every institutional means available to defend the rights and dignity of women.”
