Major shift to hybrids in 2026 — they now account for more than 50% of new registrations

Vehicle registrations in Cyprus rose 13.2% in the first half of 2026, with hybrid saloon passenger cars’ market share climbing to 51.7%, according to data from the Statistical Service.

A total of 29,367 vehicles were registered between January and June 2026, compared with 25,954 in the same period of 2025.

Saloon passenger car registrations rose 13%, reaching 22,597, compared with 20,004 in the first half of 2025.

Total vehicle registrations reached 29,367.

Saloon passenger car registrations reached 22,597, of which 7,245 were new and 15,352 used.

The share of hybrid vehicles rose to 51.7%, from 43%.

The share of electric vehicles edged up to 4.9%, from 4.8%.

Petrol-powered vehicles fell to a 35.2% share, from 43.6%.

Diesel-powered vehicles fell to an 8.2% share, from 8.6%.

According to the “Motor Vehicle Registrations” report, total registrations in June 2026 reached 5,624, an increase of 13.8% compared with 4,942 registrations in June 2025.

Saloon passenger car registrations for the same month rose 14.8%, reaching 4,338, compared with 3,780 in June 2025.

Petrol declines, hybrids rise

The market data shows a clear strengthening of hybrid vehicles, which now account for more than half of all saloon passenger cars registered in the first half of the year.

By contrast, petrol and diesel vehicles recorded a decline in their market share. The share of petrol vehicles fell to 35.2%, while diesel fell to 8.2%.

Electric vehicles saw a small increase in their share, reaching 4.9%.

Rental cars fell 11.8%, down to 2,487, from 2,820 in the same period last year.

Increase in buses, trucks and motorcycles

Bus registrations rose to 111 in the first half of 2026, from 78 in the same period of 2025.

Goods transport vehicles also rose, by 14.9%, reaching 3,510, compared with 3,055 in the first half of 2025.

In detail:

Light trucks rose 12.9%, to 2,795.

Road tractors rose 18.4%, to 135.

Heavy trucks rose 22.3%, to 423.

Rental vehicles in this category rose 31.9%, to 157.

Registrations of mopeds under 50cc fell to 77, from 112 in the same period of 2025.

By contrast, registrations of motorcycles over 50cc rose 13.4%, reaching 2,681, compared with 2,364 in the first half of 2025.
