The Fire Service scrambled large forces on Monday midday after a fire broke out at a frozen food factory in the Aradippou industrial zone, with the blaze quickly spreading to engulf the entire building and threatening to reach a neighbouring facility.
Ambulances have also been dispatched to the area, according to police, following reports of people affected by smoke. Roads leading to the industrial zone have been closed and vehicles are banned from entering the area.
The factory, which houses a large number of cold storage chambers, is generating an extremely intense heat load, according to Philenews information, complicating firefighting efforts. Firefighting forces have been reinforced as crews work to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent premises.
Three fire engines, a hydraulic telescopic platform and a breathing apparatus vehicle, all from Larnaca Fire Stations, are at the scene. Reinforcements have been requested from EMAK, with an additional fire engine on the way. Police have also been notified.
A search inside the factory for possible trapped persons is running in parallel with firefighting operations.
Smoke from the fire is visible across the whole of Larnaca.
