Paphos hotel occupancy down 20% as summer bookings lag

Hotel occupancy in Paphos is about 20% lower than during the same period last year, despite an increase in mainly last-minute bookings, the head of the Cyprus Hotel Association’s Paphos branch said.

Thanos Michaelides said hotels and other tourist accommodation in the city and district should normally be more than 90% full during June, July and August. This year, however, occupancy stands at only 70%.

“Although there is an upward trend in bookings, mainly last-minute bookings, this does not cover the gap needed to reach normal levels for the season,” Michaelides said.

He said the decline had pushed the sector to take measures, including seeking support from domestic tourism, promoting special offers and maintaining high service standards.

Michaelides said he believed these measures would continue to generate interest in Cyprus hotels.
