A 17-year-old died after being stabbed in the chest during a violent brawl in the Athens suburb of Kallithea shortly before midnight, with a suspect arrested shortly afterwards, according to Greek media reports.
The incident took place at Megaloupoleos Street, where around ten people are reported to have been involved in a fight. Greek authorities attributed the motive to football rivalry.
A key witness told officers from the anti-crime unit that the victim’s group had been in Kallithea square when a car pulled up, occupants got out, and a violent brawl broke out involving knives and screwdrivers.
An ambulance transported the teenager to hospital in serious condition. He died later from his wounds despite the efforts of doctors.
A knife, a T-shirt, and a screwdriver were found at the scene and are being examined. Those involved are believed to have known each other, and officers from the Sub-Directorate for Sports Violence are investigating their backgrounds.
Security teams collected statements from eyewitnesses and are searching for CCTV footage from the area to identify those responsible.
