British citizen convicted of killing his wife who had terminal cancer, dies in hospital

Extensively covered in the British media, the 2021 incident had brought up a number of legal as well as ethical questions connected to euthanasia, as 78 year old David Hunter had claimed that his wife Janice, who was suffering from terminal cancer, had been begging him to end her life for weeks.

Janice died in their Tremithousa home in the Paphos district, in December 2021 and David was found guilty of manslaughter two years later.

His daughter, 53 year old Lesley Cawthorne confirmed to the Daily Mail that the man had died at a Cyprus hospital last Wednesday, following a urinary infection.

The defence had claimed in court that the woman’s death came after she repeatedly called on her husband to kill her, as the blood cancer suffering had progressively become unbearable.

David Hunter was released from prison in the summer of 2023, after serving part of his sentence, as his health deteriorated.

Hunter, a former miner from Northumberland, stayed in Cyprus following his release, in order to be near his wife’s grave.

The couple had been married for 52 years and had moved to the island in 2002.
