Motorcyclists ‘particularly vulnerable’, Limassol traffic chief warns after fatal crash

Limassol’s Traffic Police chief has warned that motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable road users and called for greater care on the roads, following the death of 29-year-old Dimitris Vasiliou in a collision on the Limassol–Paphos motorway in the early hours of Saturday.

Speaking at the scene, Marios Charalambous said the crash occurred at around 03:15 near the Agios Silas exit, when Vasiliou’s motorcycle struck the rear of a minibus driven by a 57-year-old man. “The accident is under investigation and all scenarios are being examined,” he said.

On-scene examination appeared to show no brake marks at the point of impact. The minibus driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

Vasiliou, from Kato Polemidia, had been out for the evening and was returning home when the collision occurred, approximately 1.5 kilometres from his house. He was wearing a helmet and protective clothing on his upper body. He was taken by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Asked about a pattern of fatal motorcycle accidents in recent days, particularly involving large-engine bikes, Charalambous said motorcyclists are especially vulnerable users of the road network. “We call on everyone to drive carefully and observe the Highway Code,” he said. “Excessive speed is a factor that often plays a role.”

Apollon supporters paid tribute to Vasiliou on social media, mourning the loss of a fellow fan.

Limassol Traffic Police said the investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision is continuing.
