AKEL and Volt have called a joint protest outside the Law Office in Nicosia on Monday June 22 at 18:30, following the publication of the Independent Authority against Corruption’s report on the Mafia State investigation.
In a joint announcement, the two parties said the Authority’s report had confirmed what society had experienced for years under the Anastasiades system of power, citing what they described as extensive entanglement, scandals, and practices of concealing corruption during the Anastasiades-DISY government.
The offences for which former President Nicos Anastasiades and those in his circle are under scrutiny are extremely serious and bring shame on the country, the announcement said.
The two parties said the alleged criminal offences add to what they described as glaring conflicts of interest, manipulation of institutions and the arrogance of a closed system of interests which, they claimed, continues to this day under the Christodoulides government.
Impunity for all of this cannot continue, AKEL and Volt said, calling what they described as a universal demand of society for an independent and unimpeachable investigation into everything recorded in the report, the dismantling of the system of entanglement and concealment, and the restoration of the rule of law.
In the announcement, the two parties set out four demands: the immediate resignation of Attorney General Giorgos Savvides and Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides; an independent investigation into the offences recorded in the report; the prosecution of suspects and accountability and punishment of those found guilty; and the restoration of institutions and the rule of law.
