An intensive island-wide police operation involving hundreds of citizen stops and vehicle searches on Friday night resulted in the arrest of nine individuals, according to official figures.

The widespread deployment saw officers establish checkpoints at key locations across urban centres. While police described the sweep as a preventative measures to combat serious crime and maintain public order, the mass operation resulted in 810 people being stopped and searched, alongside 666 vehicles pulled over for inspection during the night.

Officers also conducted raids on 83 commercial premises, which yielded 28 administrative violations.

The bulk of police activity took place on the roads, where traffic checks led to 371 fines being issued and 28 further traffic cases placed under investigation. Officers also impounded 20 vehicles.

Data from the operation shows that speeding made up the largest share of traffic offences, with 118 citations issued. Furthermore, out of 263 breathalyser tests administered to drivers, 27 resulted in drink-driving violations, while eight drug-driving tests detected three positive cases.
