A court has ordered the eight-day remand of the 24-year-old suspect in the Kato Polemidia attempted murder case, after Limassol CID applied for his detention.
The suspect presented himself to Limassol CID at around 7:30am on Thursday, where he was arrested on an existing court warrant. He was subsequently brought before Limassol District Court, which approved the CID’s application and ordered his remand.
When questioned in writing, the suspect said he would say what he had to say in court, according to Philenews.
Victim identifies suspect
Following surgery, the 23-year-old victim, speaking in the presence of a police officer from his hospital room, named the suspect as the person who had attacked him. In a subsequent statement, he said the person who injured him was the suspect, that a misunderstanding between them had preceded the attack, and that the suspect had attacked and stabbed him with a knife.
Information still under investigation suggests the two men may have fallen out over supporter-related content on Instagram, though other motives have not been ruled out.
Missing items and CCTV
Investigations are under way to locate the knife used in the attack as well as items belonging to the victim — a bag, his mobile phone, and €500 in cash — which were not found on him. CCTV footage from the area will also be examined for recordings of the suspect’s movements.
Background
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon outside premises in Kato Polemidia. According to evidence under examination, a heated argument between the two men escalated into a violent altercation, during which the 23-year-old was seriously stabbed and the suspect fled the scene.
The victim sustained a six-centimetre wound to the ascending colon, as well as a rupture of the intestinal wall. A second traumatic injury of approximately two centimetres was also identified.
