Globe of Death show grounded on Limassol seafront over safety

A court has banned the “Globe of Death” acrobatic show from the Limassol seafront after the municipality found it had failed to meet safety and licensing requirements, with the Cyprus Fire Service judging the structure unsuitable on inspection.

The Municipal Council had earlier agreed to grant space at the Molos for the show, on condition that the applicant met all the required terms, including securing the operating licence provided for by law.

The applicant was informed of those terms in good time, the municipality said, but a same-day inspection by municipal services found they had not been met. The licence could not be issued, as the safe operation of the installation could not be guaranteed.

To protect public safety, the municipality turned to the District Court, which issued an order prohibiting the staging, use and operation of the show at the Molos area. Police has been informed and will enforce the ban.

The municipality urged the public to take care during the three-day Kataklysmos period and to bear in mind that no operating licence had been secured for the show.
