Cyprus rainfall reaches 230% of May normal as storms continue to drench the island

Cyprus had recorded 230% of its normal May rainfall by Wednesday morning, with six areas receiving more than three times their monthly average, according to preliminary data released by the Department of Meteorology.

The island’s average total rainfall from May 1 to 9am on May 27 stood at 45.1 millimetres, against a monthly average of 19.6 millimetres.

The six areas exceeding 300% of normal rainfall were Paphos Airport (394%), Polis Chrysochous (375%), Stavros tis Psokas (371%), Xylotymbou (327%), Prodromos (309%) and Limassol new port (360%).

The highest total rainfall in the same period was recorded at Prodromos with 114.1 millimetres (309% of normal), followed by Stavros tis Psokas with 100.8 millimetres (371%), Saittas with 88.8 millimetres (244%), Platania with 80.6 millimetres (193%) and Pano Panagia with 67.8 millimetres (235%).

The lowest rainfall was recorded at Larnaca Airport with 13.6 millimetres (143% of normal), followed by Athienou with 15.1 millimetres (83% of normal) and Frenaros with 18.3 millimetres (171% of normal).
