Cyprus recalls 664 Saab vehicles over Takata airbag defect that could cause serious injury or death

The Department of Road Transport is recalling 664 Saab vehicles in Cyprus over a defective Takata driver’s airbag that could fire metal fragments if deployed, posing a risk of serious injury or death.

The recall follows notification from General Motors. The department warns that if the airbag is activated, the inflator may rupture and eject metal fragments.

Affected owners have been contacted by registered post and SMS. They are required within eight months to have the faulty airbag replaced by a licensed vehicle technician and submit the original certificates confirming the work to the Department of Road Transport.

If owners fail to comply within the deadline, their vehicle’s roadworthiness certificate will be suspended immediately without further notice, the road tax licence will also be suspended, and the vehicle will not be permitted to undergo a technical inspection until it is fully compliant.

The department advises owners not to use affected vehicles until the faulty component has been replaced.

A full list of affected vehicles by registration number and chassis number is available at https://www.gov.cy/mtcw/saab/ and on the Department of Road Transport website. For further information, owners can contact the department on 22807000 or at [email protected].
