Twenty-seven MPs are leaving the Cypriot parliament following last Sunday’s elections, collecting tax-free gratuities of between €90,000 and €250,000, depending on the number of terms served.
Eighteen chose not to stand — either because their parties limit members to three terms or because they opted out — while nine stood but failed to win re-election. One departing MP will receive nothing, having served too briefly to qualify.
Gratuities range from €90,000 gross for MPs who completed a single term to €250,000 gross for those who served two or more. From the age of 60, departing MPs will also receive monthly pensions of between €1,600 and €4,500. The payments are tax-free, as they are for civil servants. Some will receive the pension on top of other income, as a number plan to continue working or already draw a pension from prior employment.
Despite recent changes to the pensions legislation for public officials, the departing MPs will begin drawing their pensions at 60 rather than 65. The new retirement age of 65 does not apply retroactively — it takes effect only for officials elected or appointed after August 2025.
The 2026 state budget includes a €2 million allocation for gratuities to officials leaving office following the elections. That figure may rise, given the larger-than-expected number of MPs who failed to secure seats. A further €5.4 million is budgeted for pensions to state officials, a figure that covers more than just MPs.
MPs receiving €90,000 and €1,600 a month
Eight MPs who completed only one term will each receive a €90,000 gratuity and a monthly pension of €1,600. They are: Alexandra Attalides (Volt), Michalis Giakoumis (previously elected with DIPA, stood unsuccessfully for DIKO), Stavros Papadouris (Ecologists), Christos Senekis (DIKO), Rita Theodorou Superman, Nikos Sykas (DISY), Alekos Tryfonidis (DIPA), and Christos Christofia (AKEL).
MPs receiving €250,000 and €4,500 a month
The remaining 19, who served two or more terms, will receive a €250,000 gratuity and a monthly pension of €4,500. They are:
From DISY: Averof Neofytou, Nikos Tornaritis, Haris Georgiadis, Efthymios Diplaros, Onoufrios Koullаs, Marios Mavridis, and Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis.
From AKEL: Andros Kyprianou, Andreas Kafkalias, and Kostas Kosta. AKEL members who leave parliament are required under internal party rules to hand their gratuity to the party.
From DIKO: Pavlos Mylonas and Christos Orfanidis.
From EDEK: Marinos Sizopoulos and Ilias Myrianthous.
From DIPA: Marios Garoyan.
From the Ecologists: Charalambos Theopemptou.
Independent: Kostis Efstathiou and Andreas Themistocleous.
The MP who missed out
Giorgos Penintaex will receive neither a gratuity nor a pension. He only took up his seat in December 2025, after Marinos Moushouttas was appointed Labour Minister, leaving him short of the service required to qualify. DIPA won no seats in Sunday’s election.
