Storms, hail and strong winds forecast for Cyprus on Wednesday

A weak low-pressure system and an unstable air mass are bringing unsettled conditions to Cyprus on Wednesday, with scattered rain and the risk of isolated thunderstorms and hail.

The Department of Meteorology said the island will be partly to mainly cloudy throughout the day, with localised rain expected. From midday onwards, developing cloud cover is forecast to produce isolated thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains and the eastern half of the island. Hail is possible during any thunderstorm.

Winds will blow from the south-west to north-west at force four to five, gradually strengthening to force five to six. On southern coasts, gusts may reach force seven. Seas will be slight to moderate, turning moderate during the day.

Temperatures will reach 26°C inland, around 24°C on the southern and eastern coasts, around 21°C on the western and northern coasts, and 16°C in the highest mountain areas.

Unsettled conditions are expected to continue through Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with intermittent cloud and isolated rain and thunderstorms forecast mainly in the afternoons over the mountains and the eastern half of the island. Hail cannot be ruled out.

Temperatures will rise slightly on Thursday before dipping again by Saturday, remaining below seasonal averages.
