Rescued humpback whale found dead off Denmark

A humpback whale rescued in Germany two weeks ago after becoming stranded has been found dead near an island in Denmark, the Danish environmental protection agency said.

The agency confirmed that the whale found near Anholt was the same animal that had become stranded in Germany and was the focus of major rescue efforts.

The young male, whom German media had called Timmi, was first found trapped on a sandbank on March 23 in the Bay of Wismar, on the Baltic coast.

After several failed attempts to free it, the whale was eventually guided onto a water-filled barge and transferred to the North Sea, where it was released on May 2.
