Workers have spent two days demolishing the abandoned and dangerous 14-storey Pieris Estates building on Omonia Avenue in Limassol, with the site set to make way for a new development, according to philenews sources.
The Limassol District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) issued the demolition permit a few weeks ago, following meetings between the applicants and the DLGO over the building’s height and its proximity to Omonia Avenue.
The demolition methodology was submitted to the DLGO by the applicants’ consultant, and works are being carried out according to a specific plan using specialist machinery brought from abroad.

The building — originally known as the Maritime Building — has stood abandoned for nearly five decades. Pieris Estates began construction in 1977 with the ambition of creating what would have been the tallest building in Cyprus at the time.
In recent months a fire broke out at the site in which tyres were burned. The building had previously been occupied by homeless people and had become a site of waste accumulation and rodents, prompting Limassol Municipality to carry out a clean-up of the premises.
