British Bases keep all lines of inquiry open after body found in burnt-out car in Liopetri

British Bases police have issued an update keeping all lines of inquiry open in the case of a charred body found inside a burnt-out car in Liopetri on Monday morning, as DNA samples taken from the remains are awaited for identification purposes.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the British Bases said: “This is a complex investigation and no lines of enquiry have been ruled out while evidence is gathered and assessed.” They added that they are “currently attending an active investigation near Dhekelia” and urged the public “to refrain from speculating while enquiries continue.”

The vehicle belongs to a 77-year-old from Xylofagou who has been missing since Sunday. The body inside was found in an unrecognisable condition and DNA samples have been taken for identification.

British Bases police received a call from a member of the public at 9am on Monday reporting a burnt vehicle in an area near the Liopetri fish farm. Officers attended and found a charred body inside. Fire service units and the British Bases Criminal Investigation Department were called to the scene.

A number of items of evidence were collected at the scene and are to be sent for scientific examination. The burnt vehicle was completely destroyed, which has significantly hampered efforts to draw firm conclusions about the cause of the fire.
