Aradippou’s €8m Kyriakou Matsi avenue reconstruction moves forward

Aradippou Municipality has received ministerial approval to move forward with the long-delayed reconstruction of Kyriakou Matsi avenue, one of the busiest roads serving both Larnaca and Aradippou, with the first phase targeted for inclusion in the 2027 state budget.

Mayor Christodoulos Partou told Phileleftheros the municipality recently received the green light from the Interior Minister and is now advancing procedures to secure budget allocation. The two-phase project carries a total estimated cost of over €8m. “It is an urban development project, in two phases, with an 80% contribution from the state and 20% from the municipality. The design was done on our own initiative because the Public Works Department could not do it due to time constraints,” he said.

The avenue runs from the Nea Salamina Stadium roundabout towards both the motorway and Aradippou town centre.

Phase one, costed at €4m, covers the stretch from the stadium roundabout to the Australia Street roundabout and will widen the road from two lanes to four — the phase expected to deliver the most immediate traffic relief.

Phase two will extend the four-lane road as far as Aradippou Secondary School, followed by reconstruction of the existing two-lane section beyond it. “That particular stretch has quite a few shops and houses. The aim is for the phase two road to be designated commercial, so that there is development,” Partou said. No expropriations are planned.

“We want phase one in the 2027 budget and the Minister, whom we thank, said efforts will be made. We have a serious traffic problem on this road. All the traffic from Larnaca port, mainly lorries, passes through there to get to the motorway. For us it is a road of primary importance,” Partou said.

Ellados avenue works

Separately, the municipality wants a roundabout at the junction of Eleftherias and Ellados avenues included in the 2027 budget. Ellados avenue has recorded repeated road accidents, and works are already under way. Traffic lights at three junctions along the avenue, along with road lighting, are due to be completed by the end of June.

“These are works being carried out at the municipality’s expense. Unfortunately, the state handed us unfinished roads and because the safety of our residents comes first, we will do them,” Partou said.
