The NYPD has released bodycam footage showing the moment officers shot 44-year-old Anthony Griffin after he stabbed three people with a machete on April 11.
The video, recorded by an officer involved in the operation at New York’s Grand Central station, shows police repeatedly ordering the man to drop the large knife.
Griffin refused to comply with the commands and moved aggressively towards an officer. In response, the officer fired two shots, causing the 44-year-old to fall to the ground.
“Get on the ground, please,” Officer Ryan Giuffre can be heard shouting in the footage. “Nobody wants to hurt you. We can talk about this. Sit down. Buddy, I’m not going to ask you again, please. We’re going to help you.”
Griffin reportedly replied, “I am Lucifer,” before moving threateningly, leading to the fatal shots.
Prior to the confrontation with police, Griffin had stabbed three elderly people. An 85-year-old man suffered a deep head wound, a 65-year-old man sustained cuts to the head, and a 70-year-old woman was stabbed in the shoulder.
