President Nikos Christodoulides has announced that an FBI team will travel to Cyprus to assist investigations into the “Sandy” case, after the United States government responded positively to a request for help.
Christodoulides made the announcement during his opening statement at today’s Cabinet meeting.
He said that following direct communication with the US government, Cyprus requested FBI assistance with the investigation, particularly in analysing statements and testimonies, and that the response was immediately positive.
“The experience will help advance the rapid investigation of the case,” Christodoulides added.
The President also said he had been briefed by the Justice Minister on the progress of the investigations, which are, he said, at “a particularly advanced stage.”
Christodoulides further noted that the Police are in continuous contact and cooperation with Europol, specifically regarding specialised forensic checks conducted on the basis of modern European standards and methods that, he said, “cannot be challenged by anyone.”
The Sandy affair centres on allegations brought forward by journalist Makarios Drousiotis of a network involving senior Cypriot judicial, political and financial figures. All those named have denied wrongdoing. The evidence has been sent to Europol’s cybercrime laboratories for forensic examination.
