Kato Paphos residents blame abandoned hotel squatters for nightly break-ins

Hundreds of residents in a central area of tourist Kato Paphos say they have been living in despair over daily break-ins and thefts across the neighbourhood, which they allege are linked to individuals illegally occupying a nearby abandoned hotel.

Residents of the busy Tombs of the Kings avenue, in the Promitheos street area, say serious concern has spread through the neighbourhood following repeated burglaries and thefts over the past eight days.

They allege the incidents are connected to people staying illegally in an old hotel in the wider area that has been closed for more than three years. The building shows clear signs of occupation, residents say, including lights on at night, movement in corridors and clothes hanging from balconies.

Security camera footage from premises in the area has captured three individuals who may be linked to the incidents, according to residents, who have also observed suspicious movements inside the building.

Despite repeated reports to the authorities, residents say the response has been limited and the incidents are continuing every night.

They have organised an informal neighbourhood watch and reinforced their own security measures, but are calling for immediate intervention by the state, including police action, securing of the abandoned building and increased patrols.
