Easter Monday nightclub row ends with man thrown over car roof in alleged attempted murder, police say

A 22-year-old Greek Cypriot has been remanded in custody for six days as a suspect in an alleged attempted murder after a 19-year-old was struck by a car outside a nightclub near Larnaca Marina in the early hours of Easter Monday.

The suspect faces charges of attempted murder, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, negligent and reckless acts, assault causing actual bodily harm and malicious damage. Witness testimony secured by police points to romantic rivalry as the motive behind the incident.

The two men met inside the nightclub and argued. The suspect, who was accompanied by a group that included his girlfriend, was removed from the premises by security staff. At around 3:00, the 19-year-old left the nightclub with friends and found the suspect puncturing the tyres of his vehicle.

As the victim walked towards his car, the suspect got into his vehicle and allegedly drove at speed directly at him, striking him with the front of the car. The impact threw the victim over the roof of the vehicle and onto the road. The suspect then drove off at speed.

Friends took the 19-year-old to the accident and emergency department of Larnaca General Hospital, where he was found to have abrasions to the head and an injury to the knee. He was treated and discharged. The suspect was located and arrested by Larnaca CID later the same day.
