Emergency crews have pulled one body from the rubble after part of an apartment block collapsed within seconds in the Germasogeia area.
The building was home to foreign nationals of African and Egyptian origin.
After hours of efforts by the Fire Service, around 17:30, a person was pulled from the rubble, who was found to be dead.
According to witness accounts, some residents managed to leave the building in time, while others were away when the collapse happened.
The building had a total of 10 flats, with at least four people living in each, raising concerns over the exact number of residents.
