President Nikos Christodoulides says he is prepared for any scenario as the case surrounding journalist Makarios Drousiotis’s allegations continues to develop — with lawyer Nicos Clerides, who holds a file of evidence at the centre of the scandal, publicly claiming his life is under threat.
Speaking on CyBC radio as he arrived at an economic forum in Nicosia on Wednesday, Christodoulides said Justice Minister Costas Fytiris would brief him on developments at cabinet later in the day, after which specific decisions would be taken.
On Clerides’s public claim that his life is in danger, Christodoulides said anyone receiving threats should go directly to the relevant authorities. He added that the safety of every citizen is the responsibility of the state.
Drousiotis, a journalist and Volt parliamentary candidate, made a series of public allegations touching on paedophilia, corruption and serious misconduct, saying he holds supporting evidence including messages, audio and photographs.
The allegations have not been proven, and some of those named have rejected them. Clerides, who legally represents the woman known as “Sandy” and holds an archive of messages central to the case, said he would hand the documents to authorities.
