India welcomes US-Iran ceasefire and calls for unimpeded Strait of Hormuz passage

India has welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling for unimpeded freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as the country urged dialogue and diplomacy to bring an early end to the conflict.

“The conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks,” India’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. “We expect that unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce would prevail through the Strait of Hormuz.”

New Delhi reiterated that de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy were essential to resolving the crisis, which reached a turning point late on Tuesday when the US and Iran struck a ceasefire deal less than two hours before President Donald Trump’s deadline for Tehran to reopen the strait or face devastating strikes on its civilian infrastructure.
