Torrential rain swells rivers and raises dam inflows across Cyprus

Torrential rain has hit several parts of Cyprus, swelling rivers and sending more water into some dams as the island continues to grapple with water supply pressures.

Heavy rain has also been falling since Sunday afternoon on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway in the Kornos and Kofinou area, where water has built up on the road and visibility has been reduced.

Police urged drivers to exercise particular caution, drive at low speed, keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead and keep their headlights on.

According to the Department of Meteorology, cloudy conditions are expected during the day, along with rain, thunderstorms and hail, with the unsettled weather forecast to persist at least through the first days of Holy Week. The island is being affected by a weak low-pressure system.

The weather is expected to be partly cloudy at first today, with a chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly in the west and in the mountains. Around midday and in the early afternoon, conditions are expected to become locally mostly cloudy, bringing local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains and the eastern half of the island.

Hail may fall during thunderstorms, while winds are expected to become temporarily strong in the afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to rise to around 20 degrees Celsius inland and on the coast, and to around 10 degrees in the higher mountains. Frost is expected to form locally overnight.

On Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday, locally increased cloud is expected, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms likely around midday and in the early afternoon, mainly inland and over the eastern half of the island.

On Holy Wednesday, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy and isolated showers cannot be ruled out.

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly through Holy Tuesday and will remain slightly below seasonal averages, while a slight rise is expected on Holy Wednesday.
