Second dead dolphin found on Paphos coast in 15 days

A second dead dolphin in just 15 days was found washed up on the Paphos coastline on Sunday, raising concern among authorities over the repeated incidents and what may be causing them.

The latest dolphin was found dead on a beach outside Paphos airport, on the stretch of coast between Timi and Acheleia, after another dolphin was discovered dead on March 20 at Faros beach in Kato Paphos.

The animal was found on Sunday morning by amateur fishermen who regularly visit the area, according to the information provided.

They immediately alerted police, the fisheries department and the local authority. However, because of the public holiday, the competent authorities are due to go to the scene on Monday morning.

Specialists from the fisheries department are expected to carry out an inspection into the circumstances of the dolphin’s death and take tissue samples for scientific laboratory testing and analysis.

The discovery of a second dead marine mammal of this kind on the Paphos coast has raised questions and concern over what is behind the disturbing pattern.

After sampling and examinations are completed on Monday, the dolphin will be removed from the beach and taken to an appropriate site in line with the protocols for such cases.
