Conflicting accounts emerge over Drousiotis testimony at Police Headquarters

The investigation into serious allegations made by journalist Makarios Drousiotis remains stalled following his appearance at Police Headquarters, with the Ministry of Justice and the journalist providing conflicting accounts of the encounter.

According to an official announcement from the Minister of Justice, Drousiotis has yet to provide “any documented evidence” to support the claims he previously made on social media. The Minister clarified that while Drousiotis spent several hours at the headquarters, he left without signing a formal statement.

“Yesterday, departing from Headquarters without testifying in writing, he left a written typed descriptive text, unsigned, which cannot constitute evidence for solving the case,” the Ministry statement read.

The Ministry added that instructions have been given to the police to resolve the matter within clear timeframes, asserting that “society deserves it and demands it.”

The Minister’s Position

Justice Minister confirmed to philenews that based on briefing from the Chief of Police, Drousiotis limited his presence to asking questions and making suggestions regarding the investigative procedure.

The Minister stated that authorities are waiting for the material so the investigative team can formally begin taking a deposition. When asked when this would happen, the Minister noted that no specific answer was given and that Drousiotis simply stated he “would return.”

Drousiotis’s Response

In a statement titled “Regarding today’s meeting at the Police,” Makarios Drousiotis rejected the narrative of non-cooperation. He insisted there was “absolutely no difficulty or procrastination” in providing information.

“I attended the meeting with a bulky file. I analysed to the investigators the type of evidentiary material in my possession and gave them specific material for immediate use,” Drousiotis stated.

He claimed that after consulting with investigators, it was agreed that the most effective way to proceed was for him to prepare a written analysis of the material. “I am already working on the basis of the above agreement. I will deliver my statement as soon as possible, so that the Cabinet can be informed and immediately appoint independent criminal investigators.”

The developments confirm earlier reports that investigators were in a “wait-and-see” mode regarding the journalist’s stance.
