Storm Erminio lashes Paphos with gales and falling trees but brings less rain than forecast

Storm Erminio swept through Paphos overnight bringing powerful winds and minor damage but less rainfall than authorities had led residents to expect, given the system’s scale and the results of its passage through mainland Greece. The storm is forecast to weaken after midday.

Gale-force winds battered the entire Paphos district overnight, with coastal areas bearing the brunt. Two trees fell — one in Paphos town, one in the surrounding countryside — and minor damage was reported from falling rocks and displaced materials on roads.

The fire service attended both tree incidents to clear the roads.

At Kato Paphos harbour, fishermen and boat owners kept a sleepless vigil through the night, watching over their vessels as heavy seas churned the port.

Damage at the Kato Paphos pier was, however, less severe than on previous occasions, with temporary protective structures installed by Paphos Municipality successfully holding back seawater from businesses and public spaces.
