The first section of the pre-removal detention centre for migrants at Limnes opened on Sunday, with the full transfer already completed of foreign nationals who had been held at Menogeia, the Justice and Public Order Ministry said.
The ministry said the move marked a substantial upgrade of state infrastructure, strengthening the operational management of migration and immediately easing pressure on existing facilities.
In a statement, the ministry said it was moving ahead “with planning and consistency” in creating modern facilities that ensure order, functionality and respect for rights, while strengthening the state’s ability to respond effectively to what it described as an ongoing challenge.
