A 28-year-old police officer died late on Tuesday night after his motorbike collided with a car in the Engomi district of Nicosia.
The victim has been identified as Andreas Antoniou, a member of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN). The crash happened around 10:20 pm on Griva Digeni Avenue under circumstances currently being investigated by the police.
Antoniou, who was wearing a protective helmet at the time, was taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
The driver of the car, a 23-year-old woman, tested negative for both alcohol and drugs. She was subsequently arrested under a court warrant to assist with the ongoing investigation.
Nicosia Traffic Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Nicosia Traffic Department, the Citizen’s Communication Line at 1460, or their nearest police station.
