Iran has set strict conditions for restarting ceasefire talks with the United States, according to people familiar with Tehran’s negotiating position.
Among Tehran’s main demands are the closure of all US military bases in the Gulf and compensation for attacks that have been carried out against it.
Iran is also seeking a new passage regime in the Strait of Hormuz that would allow it to collect fees from ships using the strategically important waterway.
The demands also include guarantees that the conflict will not be repeated in future, an end to Israeli attacks, full lifting of international sanctions and the right to keep Iran’s missile programme without restrictions.
A US official described those demands as “unrealistic”, while Iranian and American diplomats said the terms make a ceasefire agreement even harder to reach.
