Foot-and-mouth cases reach 44 farms as culling toll hits 21,000 animals

Two new foot-and-mouth disease infections have been confirmed, bringing the total number of affected farms in Cyprus to 44, the Veterinary Services said.

The newly infected premises are a unit of 16 goats and sheep in Dromolaxia and a cattle unit of 193 animals in Meneou, both within the infected zone in the Larnaca district.

Culling is continuing today at Livadia, with the total number of goats and sheep slaughtered reaching approximately 21,000.

Vaccination has reached 89% of cattle units and 65% of goat and sheep units island-wide, the Veterinary Services said. A second booster vaccination round has already begun.

The Veterinary Services are continuing epidemiological investigations, sampling, tracing and laboratory testing. In a coordinated operation with police to detect illegal animal movements, four cases have so far been identified and authorities are taking the measures prescribed by law.
