Two injured as inert gas release hits EAC power station in Vasiliko

Two workers were injured when inert gas used for fire suppression was violently released during maintenance at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power station in Vasiliko, Larnaca district, on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 1.15pm during work by a private company to replace automatic fire suppression cylinders. The release of gas caused material to be expelled from a cylinder, injuring two employees. No structural damage was caused.

The fire service initially described the incident as an explosion before clarifying that it involved a violent release of inert gas. Larnaca fire service responded with a vehicle and rescue team.

A 41-year-old sustained a laceration to the head and was kept in hospital as a precaution, while a 42-year-old suffered minor injuries and was discharged. Both were taken to the accident and emergency department of Limassol General Hospital.

Both the police and the Department of Labour Inspection are investigating the incident.
