Warning shots fired during Nicosia chase after suspect pushes officers and flees drug stop

A 29-year-old man was arrested in Nicosia on Tuesday after pushing two traffic officers and fleeing a routine drug stop, prompting a foot chase during which police fired warning shots in the air.

Traffic Police HQ officers stopped the man’s vehicle in the Nicosia district at around 12:20 pm. When asked to take a drug test, he refused. Officers then searched the glove compartment and found a bag containing approximately two grams of cannabis.

As officers moved to arrest him for flagrant possession of a controlled substance, the man shoved both officers and ran. During the chase, he threw several objects to the ground before he was caught.

The discarded items turned out to be four bags of cocaine with a combined gross weight of 30 grams. A subsequent search of his vehicle recovered five mobile phones, five bags of cannabis with a combined gross weight of 30 grams, and €4,770 in cash.

The 29-year-old is due to appear before Nicosia District Court today for a remand order. The Nicosia unit of YKAN is continuing its investigation.
