Rain and thunderstorms hit several parts of Cyprus on Saturday morning as a wave of bad weather moved across the island and a yellow warning came into force, according to the source text and the official forecast.
The source text said videos posted by members of the public on social media showed the weather system affecting the island from the early hours of the morning.
The yellow warning took effect at 7 am on Saturday and remains in force until 7 am on Sunday, with a combination of prolonged rainfall, isolated thunderstorms and strengthened north-easterly winds expected to affect the island at intervals. The Department of Meteorology warning says total rainfall is likely locally to exceed 55 millimetres over 24 hours.
The warning also points to the risk of localised flooding, disruption to outdoor activities and difficult driving conditions because of reduced visibility and aquaplaning.
According to the source text, police issued an advisory urging drivers to be especially careful because of the severe weather affecting many parts of Cyprus. The advisory called on motorists to drive at low speeds, keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead and use dipped headlights.
