Road tax renewals deadline extended after government website failures

Cyprus’s parliament unanimously passed emergency legislation on Thursday extending the road tax renewal deadline to 31 March 2026, after technical problems with the Road Transport Department website left many drivers unable to renew before the midnight deadline of 11 March.

The bill, tabled by MP Alekos Tryfonides, was put to a plenary vote as urgent legislation and approved unanimously. Transport Committee members had agreed the extension in consultation with the Transport Ministry following the website failures.

The legislation is retrospective from 11 March, allowing the Road Transport Department to refund all charges incurred by drivers who renewed from midnight on 12 March until the law was published and were charged late penalties.

The surcharge consists of a €10 fee plus an amount equal to 10% of the road tax corresponding to the sum owed for the current year.
