Limassol carnival left 50 tonnes of waste behind — and 500 volunteers to tackle it

More than 500 volunteers took part in a post-carnival cleanup along Arch. Makariou III Avenue in Limassol following the Limassol Carnival’s Grand Parade, collecting 8.5 tonnes of recyclable materials in three hours — a tenfold increase in volunteer participation compared to last year.

The initiative was organised by City Friends Club, working alongside municipal services. Volunteers focused on sorting specific recyclable waste streams — plastics, metals, drink cartons and sprays, including 7 tonnes of sprays alone — before municipal services completed the full clearance of the streets. In total, municipal services removed 50 tonnes of waste. The sorted recyclables were transported to state-licensed organisations and sent to recycling facilities abroad rather than landfill.

Anna Gubareva, founder of City Friends Club, said the turnout marked the largest cleanup in the organisation’s four-year history. “It has become the largest cleanup in our four-year history, showing that community spirit in our city continues to grow,” she said. “We are especially proud that during the carnival, people chose not only to celebrate and have fun, but also to give back to the city.”
