Gender equality is a fundamental prerequisite for peace, stability, and sustainable development, Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou stated on Sunday.
In a written statement marking International Women’s Day, Christodoulou described gender equality as a core element of social cohesion and a consistent priority for the Republic of Cyprus. “The protection of women’s rights and the strengthening of their participation in all sectors of society is an integral part of our policy,” she added.
Stability in a time of crisis
The Commissioner noted that during periods of regional instability and heightened geopolitical challenges, the government’s commitment to equality between women and men remains “firm and non-negotiable.”
She emphasized that Cyprus promotes these principles at every level, specifically pointing to the implementation of the “Women, Peace and Security” framework. This initiative, based on UN Security Council Resolution 1325, confirms the significant role women play in shaping security policies, preventing conflict, and promoting peace.
“Gender equality is a prerequisite for peace, stability and sustainable development,” Christodoulou concluded.
