Iran embassy in Cyprus says island’s positive relations with Tehran remain, despite drone strikes on Akrotiri

Iran’s embassy in Cyprus has sought to reassure the country that bilateral relations remain strong and unaffected by the escalating regional conflict, insisting that Tehran has never initiated aggression.

In a statement issued to in-cyprus, the embassy said the two countries had “consistently enjoyed very positive relations, free from any tension or discord,” and that authorities on both sides remain committed to preserving and strengthening those ties.

The statement came as Cyprus grapples with the fallout from an Iranian-made drone strike on the UK’s military base RAF Akrotiri, and the interception of two further drones reportedly heading for Akrotiri on Monday. The strikes have rattled the public. In response, Greece deployed two navy frigates and fighter jets to Cyprus.

The embassy described Iran’s actions in the war as purely defensive, saying it was “a source of national pride for Iran that it has never initiated aggression against any country.” It said Iran had demonstrated goodwill by agreeing to engage in dialogue with Washington in February 2026, despite what it described as repeated US hostilities — a reference to the series of US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities that began in June 2025 and culminated in the large-scale joint offensive launched on 28 February 2026.

“Regrettably, past experiences were repeated,” the embassy said, adding that this “clearly demonstrated that Iran has never sought to escalate tension or pursue war.”

The embassy reiterated that diplomacy and dialogue remain Iran’s preferred means of resolving disputes.

The Cypriot government has repeatedly stressed that the Republic of Cyprus is not a target in the conflict and is not party to any military operation.

Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said Monday that Cyprus had communicated its displeasure to Britain over the use of the British Bases in the strongest terms, and noted that London had since clarified that the bases in Cyprus were not among those being made available to the United States for operations against Iran.
