Limassol District Court remanded two men, aged 28 and 33, for eight days on Sunday following a string of arsons linked to a suspected protection racket.
Judge in the Limassol District Court ruled that there is sufficient evidence to hold the pair as police investigate charges including participation in a criminal organisation, conspiracy, arson, and malicious damage. The 33-year-old also faces a charge of building break-in relating to an incident on January 25, 2026.
The court heard that the investigation relies heavily on a “catalytic” statement from a confidential informant. According to police, the informant was approached by the 28-year-old suspect and offered money to join the group.
The gang allegedly extorted Limassol business owners for protection money. Investigators told the court that when owners refused to pay, the group carried out malicious attacks, including torching property, to apply pressure.
Evidence presented to the court includes:
- CCTV footage and security guard testimony.
- Telecommunications data placing the 28-year-old’s phone near a January 25 arson site.
- A high-powered motorcycle allegedly used in three out of four arsons, including an attack on a wine shop in Germasogeia.
Search for third suspect and hideouts
Defence lawyers objected to the remand, arguing there was no firm link between their clients and the crimes. However, the judge found that releasing the suspects could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
A second 28-year-old man was arrested at Larnaca Airport on Saturday and appeared in court separately on Sunday.
Police are currently searching for clothing worn by the 33-year-old during the crimes and the motorcycle used in the attacks. Officers are also investigating claims that the group hid mobile phones and vehicles at private residences and a local cafe. Investigators expect to take 30 more statements and conduct financial audits as the probe continues.
