No new foot-and-mouth cases found as Cyprus vaccination drive continues

No new cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been detected in the infected area following the latest round of sampling, the Veterinary Services spokeswoman said on Friday morning.

Senior Veterinary Officer Soteria Georgiadou said cattle vaccinations across the entire 3km zone have been completed, while vaccinations within the 10km zone are ongoing. Steps have also been taken to order vaccines for pigs, she added.

EU experts who briefed farming organisations and groups of sheep, goat and cattle farmers on the vaccination programme and protective measures this morning left satisfied and were due to depart later in the day, according to Georgiadou.

The vaccination plan will be reassessed in two weeks. A large consignment of vaccines from the European Commission is expected to arrive tomorrow morning.

Georgiadou urged an immediate halt to the movement of animals, animal feed and people, particularly within the 3km and 10km zones.

Where movement is essential, farmers must obtain a special permit from the Veterinary Services. “We are in a standstill situation. We have sent SMS messages to all farmers,” she said.

She also confirmed that the culling of animals is continuing, with a team from the relevant authorities searching for suitable burial sites.
