Police have handed the investigation file on suspended Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos to the Law Office, which will now decide whether to prosecute him over an alleged rape, a source told philenews. The news was first reported by OMEGA.
The alleged rape took place in 2014. The decision on how to proceed now rests with the Law Office and, primarily, its leadership.
Three outcomes are possible: the case could be referred to the Assize Court; the file could be shelved for lack of sufficient evidence; or police could be instructed to carry out further investigative work. However, the third option appears less likely, given that the special investigation team — which reported solely to police — had already received guidance from the Law Office on significant aspects of the investigation.
According to sources, evidence and witness statements have been secured in the case. These will be evaluated by competent officials at the Attorney General’s office.
Earlier in the investigation, on Wednesday 18 February, police consulted the Law Office for guidance on the same day Phedonos was called to give his investigative statement at Nicosia CID.
Domestic violence case
The special investigation team also examined, on its own initiative, a separate domestic violence complaint against Phedonos. There is no complainant in that case. Phedonos’s wife has stated publicly on social media that she had officially requested that the domestic violence investigation be discontinued.
