The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has voiced support for Wednesday’s protest outside Police Headquarters over the disappearance of cats in Latsia, while accusing the Chief of Police of failing to respond to correspondence on animal welfare issues.
In a statement issued on February 25, 2026, the party and its Animal Action Group expressed backing for the demonstration scheduled for 2.30pm outside Nicosia Police Headquarters in connection with the case of the missing cats.
The party said the case was reported on January 22, 2026, and that the cats remain unaccounted for.
“We fully understand the concern of the volunteers who were caring for the animals on a daily basis,” the statement said. The Greens called on the competent authorities to continue “without delay” a full investigation until the fate of the animals is determined and responsibilities are assigned where they arise.
The party added that there are reports of continued cat disappearances across Cyprus, describing the situation as “extremely worrying”.
According to the statement, the party’s president, Stavros Papadouris, has already sent an official letter to the Chief of Police requesting the immediate and full investigation of the incidents, intensified inquiries and an update on actions taken so far by the authorities.
At the same time, the Greens expressed protest over what they described as a lack of response from the Chief of Police, Themistos Arnaoutis, to letters sent by the party on issues relating to animal protection.
They said they are still awaiting progress in the investigation into the alleged abuse of a turtle on the beach in Chlorakas, adding that they would not allow such cases to be forgotten and would continue to seek “convincing answers”.
“The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation stands with all animal lovers and will continue to work for the good of all animals in Cyprus,” the statement concluded.
Police have previously confirmed that the Latsia case is under investigation and that statements are still being taken. Authorities have not established criminal wrongdoing at this stage.
