Shocking scenes are currently unfolding at two large sheep and goat farms in Oroklini as foot-and-mouth disease continues to spread across the region.
Footage and images obtained by philenews show animals in a tragic state and reveal a significant lack of sanitary protocols, highlighted by the fact that reporters were able to access the infected site without restriction.
The two affected farmers, Giorgos Dimitriou and Kyriakos Kyriakou, whose livestock tested positive for the virus, have denounced the authorities for failing to implement measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
Video evidence from the scene shows specialized vehicles collecting dead animals, while farmers confirmed that many other animals on-site are currently dying.
A major point of contention for the farmers is that the area had not been cordoned off by the time journalists arrived. The absence of a perimeter allowed various vehicles to pass through the site, posing a severe risk of transporting the virus to other areas.
One farmer testified that positive results were confirmed yesterday evening and again this morning, yet no exclusion zone was established. This was further evidenced by the fact that media crews were able to reach the units following reports published at 11:07 am.
While authorities have alleged that the two farmers delayed informing them about the situation, this claim appears to be contradicted by the timeline of events.
