Environmental Movement demands investigation into cat disappearances

The Cyprus Environmental Movement has expressed deep concern over increasing reports of cat disappearances across various areas of the island, calling on authorities to launch an immediate investigation.

The organisation said the incidents are causing significant public unrest and raise serious questions about animal protection and welfare.

According to the statement, abuse, illegal trapping or removal of animals constitute unacceptable practices that violate both legislation and the basic principles of a modern and civilised society.

The organisation stressed that animal protection is not only a legal obligation but also an indicator of social sensitivity and humanity. It called on authorities to thoroughly investigate all complaints, identify those responsible and ensure accountability where warranted.

The movement also requested the strengthening of inspections and implementation of effective preventive measures to prevent similar incidents in future.

The Cyprus Environmental Movement appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities, emphasising that cooperation between citizens, organisations and the state is crucial for protecting vulnerable animals.

The organisation said it will continue to closely monitor the issue and intervene where necessary, noting that animal protection is everyone’s responsibility and a fundamental element of strengthening animal welfare culture in society.
