SHSO admits parents’ anger over building work and conditions justified

The State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) has admitted parents of children in Makarios Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology ward are right to complain about construction noise and disruption.

Building work above the ward – specifically in the Paediatric Surgery Theatre area – has caused leaks and excessive noise, SHSO said in a statement on Thursday.

The noisy phase should finish by 13 December 2026, when drainage trenching work wrapping up will significantly cut noise levels, the organisation said.

Leaks and plumbers on standby

Small water leaks occurred during demolition work because old shut-off valves couldn’t fully stop the water supply. A plumber was kept on site throughout demolitions to deal with any problems immediately.

The noise spiked when workers cut trenches in the floor for drainage pipes. The Paediatric Oncology management was told about the work in advance, SHSO said.

New restrictions

Heavy work now starts after 8 am and stops between 1 pm and 2 pm. No noisy work will take place at weekends.

After complaints about water quality, SHSO tested samples and found no issues with the hospital’s water supply. It installed central water filters anyway as a precaution.

The organisation has set up weekly on-site meetings with the full project team, on top of monthly site meetings. An SHSO engineer now carries out daily inspections in addition to the contractor’s own site supervisor.
