SHSO investigates death of woman found on toilet floor after surgery

State health authorities are investigating the death of a 42-year-old woman who was found face down, semi-naked and wet on a hospital toilet floor hours before entering an irreversible coma following routine surgery.

Georgia was discovered on the toilet floor at 06:20 on 18 January, according to her medical file, yet her family was initially told she had fallen from her bed, the State Health Services Organisation said.

The investigation into the full circumstances of her death is being conducted in cooperation with police and is expected to conclude very soon, SHSO said in an update.

The woman had undergone a hysterectomy at Larnaca General Hospital on 16 January and her post-operative condition was initially assessed as good with no concerning findings, according to a family complaint letter published by Alpha.

Two days after surgery, on 18 January, the family was suddenly informed their relative had suffered a serious brain episode and had entered a comatose state that treating doctors characterised as irreversible, the letter states.

The woman had been hospitalised in the comatose state due to inadequate care following her surgical procedure, according to the complaint.
