Authorities warn of water cuts in Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta after plant fault

The Department of Water Development has warned that potable water supply to Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta may be temporarily reduced due to a technical problem at the Larnaca desalination plant.

According to the department, the fault occurred over the weekend and efforts are under way to restore full operation of the Larnaca plant within the day.

Until the plant is fully reintegrated into the system, water supply to the affected areas is being covered through the Tersefanou Water Treatment Plant, the Kornos Water Treatment Plant and the Dhekelia desalination unit.

The department noted that the total storage capacity of reservoirs currently stands at 87,750 cubic metres for Nicosia, 22,000 cubic metres for Larnaca, and 15,000 cubic metres for Paralimni and Ayia Napa. This capacity has so far helped prevent shortages for consumers.

However, both consumers and water supply authorities have been urged to use water responsibly and to limit consumption to essential needs where possible.

The department also said that a technical issue was reported at the Vasiliko desalination plant, but this was resolved immediately following coordinated action by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus and the Department of Water Development.
